The City of Oldsmar formed a partnership with the Tampa Bay Lightning to "Build the Thunder" in Oldsmar. This first "Lightning Made' outdoor hockey rink in Pinellas County is scheduled to open in the Summer/Fall of 2019.
This new facility will be in the Oldsmar Sports Complex, located at 3120 Tampa Road. The initial costs from the City's side will cover the required Engineering to prepare the ground surface for the rink construction, and the concrete base itself. The agreement provides that the Lightning Foundation, through funding from the NHL and NHL Players Association, will pay for the construction of the rink, provide equipment for community use, assist the City in setting up and running leagues, perform periodic clinics with Lightning alumni, and cross-promote the new facility.
The project will consist of a 120' x 60' rink with professional style dasher boards and an interlocking flooring system. The facility will boast a scoreboard, seating areas, and canopy that will allow for year-round play while protecting players and spectators from the sun and elements.
The "Lightning Made" program assists local non-profits and municipalities with the construction of outdoor hockey rinks, to increase interest and participation in youth hockey programs. The Lightning generously provides equipment to help programs get up and running.
