IMPORTANT NOTICE for Oldsmar Residents and Businesses

There was a recent news story regarding a new spam/phishing scam involving the City of Oldsmar of which the public should be aware.

The City received several reports of staff and residents receiving emails that appear to be from City email addresses and contain a link to documents that require review. However, these emails were not sent by City employees. These emails are “spam,” unsolicited junk email sent to many recipients. The emails in question have been sent from addresses that have been “spoofed,” where the sender’s address has been forged. These emails also contain what is known as a “phishing scam,” which is the fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from a reputable source with the intention of convincing individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.

The City has received these emails internally as well. City employees are instructed to report suspicious emails to the City’s IT staff and delete emails that they believe to phishing scams.

One way that users can tell that an email is a phishing scam is by hovering the mouse over the link in the body of the email. The link’s destination address will pop-up, and users can see that it does not point to the pictured source (Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.), but to a different link that takes users to an unsecure site.

The City is taking efforts to reduce its domain from being used as a target for spam, spoofing, and phishing. Unfortunately, even with the proper measures in place in our email servers, there are nefarious individuals and organizations using the internet to attempt to gain access to users’ personal information.
